More on us
At MMBC we do things a little differently. We surf twice in a two round comp system.
First round everyone is all in… A Grade, B Grade, Ladies, Juniors and Overs 50s all mixed in together. Second round is based on how you go in the first round, so 1st, 2nd and 3rd’s all surf against each other and then 4th, 5th and 6th’s all surf against each other. The point system reflects this. Sometimes we have to squish a late comer in and we have 7 surfers, so we have also included that in the scoring, see below: the left column are the points for your first heat and then the top positions are for your second round, then you get your total.
We do hold 3x knockout comps a year, one in May (to get you ready for the Snowy) and the other the last comp of the year, our December comp which we hold in November and to add importance we make it double points!! December is pretty busy so we wrap up things early so you can enjoy the Christmas Chaos!!
These points are explained on our Pointscore page
Comp days
The comp usually goes lives on LiveHeats about a week out, then you have till 6pm of the Saturday night before to register. We normally do the heats just after so they are ready for the morning, so we’re not a fan of late comers but if there s free spot in the draw we’ll add you in.
The trailer usually arrives around 6:30am to set up, and ready for a 7am start. We release the heat draw on LiveHeats around then to get the first heat in the water by 7:15am (sometime we may tag the 6 surfers on instagram).
Everyone surfs a heat, skips a heat then, judges a heat. There might be only 3 iPads but we need spotters and sine there heaps of new members we need everyone to judge so you might need learn and help show someone how it works, all hands on decks!
AD (Andy Dennis) makes sure we have judges for each heat and if we don’t it slows the days down, plus it’s not fun nagging people to help. Along with the Tehan brothers (Sam and Jac) they are all making sure the scorings on point and making sure the day runs smoothly and LiveHeats is working for us, if you have any questions about the heats or point system hit one of them up!
You can free surf between heats but NOT in the comp area please, a little north or south is fine, but please don’t get in the way of our own comp.
BBQ King Paul gets the barbee lit up early with eggs and bacon rolls, then into lunch for sausage snags. There are a few snacks & fruit in between, some water, soft drinks and plenty of cold beer to wrap up the day. If your vego please let Kate know and we’ll get you sorted :)
The Preso
The Preso is always the second Saturday (unless the venue mucks us up) and we have plenty of trophies up for grabs. Top 6 for all the grades and then there are 7x Perpetual trophies and a Surfboard to be won!!
Most Improved - Someone who shakes it up from the year before and blows their personal scores out of the water!
Best Tube Ride - Makes everyone scream from the beach
Best Wipe Out - A broken board usually takes the cake
Big Kahuna - For the person/s that goes above and beyond in helping the club out throughout the year
Junior Development - To the Grom that’s charging and it helps them to push there competitive streak. We pay for them to compete in three competitions and to focus on surfing!
Junior Encouragement - This goes to a Junior that has been surfing on point for the year, they may not have won but there improving without of sight!
Johny Giles “Anyone Can Win” - this goes to someone that the committee chooses based on the points, there’s a good stat that highlights someone for there amazing efforts thought out the year.
Like Jesse T last year, he surfed 4x comps and came 1st is ever single heat, so 1st and then 1st in three comps and then the last comp of knockout he came 1st each round and won!! Wow, good look A grade this year!!
Roger Kieran - Roger was the best bloke everyone wanted to surf with him, so we get everyone to vote for there top three surfers you enjoy surfing with, each get points and then the person with the most votes win.. this one is done anonymously so we can tell if you vote for your self 3x time or if it s fluffy vote haha
The surfboard - The committee chooses someone that represents the year.
